Conversations With God Intro

God speaks to us in a variety of different ways.

* Sometimes He uses circumstances.

* Other times He uses people.

* God’s voice is in His written word.

* We can hear Him in the thunder.

* We see Him in nature.

* God’s voice is usually not audible, but some actually hear Him with their ears.

* We have a gentle impression in our spirit. . .

* or a picture that comes to our mind.

God knows each of us intimately, and we can trust Him to speak to us in ways that will reach our heart.

On the following pages you will find “conversations” that I have  had with The Lord in the past. They come from my everyday walk with Him. As you read the words that are written, be encouraged.  God wants to talk with you too, in a way that is unique to your relationship with Him.

You will notice in some of the articles God calls me “Daughter”.  Don’t be surprised as you spend time with God if He has a pet name for you. He knows your name!

As we listen to God it is important to remember that God is a God of love. He is not condemning nor is He harsh. Even when He disciplines us, His motive is love. When we hear a voice that is blaming or accusing it is likely not God’s (Romans 8:1, Hebrews 12:6).

Isaiah 30:21
And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it,
when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. (NLT)

Job 37:5 God thundereth marvellously with his voice; great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend.

Genesis 15:1After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

Exodus 33:17
So the Lord said to Moses, “I will also do this thing that you have spoken; for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name.

The Gift of Faith

Ephesians 2:8
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

In a recent time of doubt I found myself crying out to God; “Lord, I need your gift of faith!”

He answered with a picture.

In my mind’s eye I saw a package.  It was neatly wrapped and had a bow on top, the type one makes from the ribbon that surrounds a box.  The corners were crisp and smoothed.   The paper was simple, yet beautiful.  As I received it, I was peaceful, comfortable to open it slowly, for I knew what was held within.  It was the gift of faith.

The joy of unwrapping complete, I felt strengthened.  I gave thanks for that which I had been given, and rejoiced at what still lay in my hands.  For in them rested a second box that looked the same as the first. As I gazed at it in wonder, I knew inside lay another, and another and still another, each ready to take its predecesor’s place.  Ready to be opened when there came a need for their heavenly contents.

“Father, would you please hold these for me?” I asked as I entrusted my gift to His care.  For there is no doubt I will someday call because I have faltered again.  When I do, I know there is waiting, all of the faith I will need.

The Gift of Faith

Carefully wrapped by You Father.
Specifically designed to be.
The gift You had planned before there was time.
A package is waiting for me.

To receive it all I must do is cry out.
And lift up expectant hands.
For the beautiful gift you are holding,
Is faith to help me stand.

Faith to believe in Your Power.
Faith to believe in Your Might.
Faith to believe in Your Endless Love.
That You turn my darkness to light.

Faith not that You will do for me,
Just exactly what I request.
But assurance that You will do for me,
Precisely what is best.

When I am confused and don’t understand,
The purpose of Your will.
You help me to trust as I wait for You.
To rest in You and be still.

Lord, I humbly give You thanks
I bow my head and my knee.
For You do not leave me on my own.
You send faith to accompany me.

Questions to Ponder:Does it seem your trust in God has grown weak? Do you need more confidence to accomplish what He is calling you to do?  Ask the Lord for more faith.  Seek it in His Word.  If you need yet more strength, ask Him again. God loves you.  He has a gift for you.

God’s Word:

Mathew 7:9-11 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? 10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? 11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

Luke 11:9 And I say unto you, Ask , and it shall be given you; seek , and ye shall find ; knock , and it shall be opened unto you.

Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Psalm 18

“Lord, I am feeling overwhelmed and afraid”.

The Lord:
“Daughter, do not forget. You can trust in me. I am powerful and mighty to save.”
Psalm 18:1 I will love thee, O LORD, my strength. 2 The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. 3 I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. 4 The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid. 5 The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me. 6 In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears. 7 Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations also of the hills moved and were shaken, because he was wroth. 8 There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it. 9 He bowed the heavens also, and came down: and darkness was under his feet. 10 And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind. 11 He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies. 12 At the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed, hail stones and coals of fire. 13 The LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail stones and coals of fire. 14 Yea, he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; and he shot out lightnings, and discomfited them. 15 Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered at thy rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils. 16 He sent from above, he took me, he drew me out of many waters. 17 He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me: for they were too strong for me. 18 They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my stay. 19 He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me……29 For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall. 30 As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him. 31 For who is God save the LORD? or who is a rock save our God? 32 It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect. 33 He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet, and setteth me upon my high places. 34 He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms. 35 Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great. 36 Thou hast enlarged my steps under me that my feet did not slip. 37 I have pursued mine enemies, and overtaken them: neither did I turn again till they were consumed. 38 I have wounded them that they were not able to rise: they are fallen under my feet. 39 For thou hast girded me with strength unto the battle: thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against me. 40 Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies; that I might destroy them that hate me. (KJV)

“Thank you LORD, that you are mighty. That you care for us and have the power to crush our enemies. That we can trust you to teach and deliver us. That you love us and sing over us.”

Questions to Ponder
Our God is a God of Power and Might, anxious to save His children.  He desires to come to our rescue when we are feeling overwhelmed and afraid.  He will save us from our enemies, physical, spiritual and emotional.

Are there areas in your life where you need the Strength of the Lord?  Remember,we can trust God to deliver us.  For He is the God whose voice thunders in the heavens and whose Power shakes the hills. He teaches us to war in times of battle, yet it is His gentleness that makes us great.  Call to the Lord today.  He loves you and wants to help.

(You may wish to find your favorite translation of the bible and choose a passage from Psalm 18 to memorize.  Then you can call on it when you need it!)

God’s Word
Zephaniah 3:17 – The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

Isaiah 63:1 . . . .Who is this in royal robes, marching in the greatness of his strength?”It is I, the LORD, announcing your salvation! It is I, the LORD, who is mighty to save!” (NLT)

Proverbs 18:10 10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe .

Just A Coincidence

At this writing I am working on a project for ALME.  It involves our Tears In A Bottle poem and while I am not an artist, it entails painting several golden tears on paper.   While struggling to get the tears to look just so, I put my ipod on to keep me company as I labored.  I turned it to one particular section of music that I don’t very often listen to.  The first song to come on was one of my favorites, “There Will Be A Day” by Jeremy Camp.  It is about the promise contained in Revelation 21:4, that there will one day be no more pain, nor sorrow nor tears.  One of the two scriptures that is in Tears In A Bottle!  I gave thanks for the encouragement, then continued on with renewed confidence that I would be successful in my efforts.

The next day in the car with our son, I was sharing about the project and getting his feedback.  Sometimes the vision for ALME can seem pretty improbable, if not impossible by earthly standards, so I decided to tell him the story of the song from the night before that his faith might be bolstered as well.  Just as I had the first sentence out of my mouth, a familiar tune came on the radio.  “There Will Be A Day” was playing again!

Now, some would say that this was just a fluke.  They would believe that the song playing twice at just the right moment was a matter of happenstance.  But I believe the Lord was cheering me on.  That He was trying to tell me not to become discouraged and give up or quit.  That He wants me to persevere.  With the God of the universe encouraging me, how can I turn back?

Questions to Ponder:
Have you ever run into just the right person at just the right time?  Or heard a message or a song that exactly fit your circumstances?  Have you had a friend come to mind, and called them to learn that they had a need for prayer?  Have you received such a call yourself?   Sometimes God speaks to us in unusal and creative ways.  When something happens and your heart quickens and excitement comes, it is surely more than just a coincidence.
God’s Word:

Judges 6:17 And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me

Job 33:14 But God speaks again and again, though people do not recognize it.

Galatians 6:9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap , if we faint not.

Isaiah 40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

Psalm 31:24  Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.

I Am Here

The week had been busy.  I had the beginnings of a cold, and my sleep had been interrupted the two nights before. We had been working all week in preparation of bringing the calves home to the barn, and had risen early that morning to make the three hour journey to the ranch.  Pulling up to the corrals, we began readying ourselves to move the cattle out of the canyon.  Sighing, I lifted my eyes to the sky as I stopped to gather resolve before the work began.

“Lord, I am weary. Today I am going to need your help”.

The sky was beautiful. A brilliant blue, contrasted by the golden hues of the fall grass which had dried through the summer. It called for a moment of pause and admiration. As I gazed up into the beauty, I heard these words in my spirit.

The Lord:
I AM here.
I AM here in the sky above you.
I AM here in the air around you.
As you breathe it into your body.
I AM with you.
I AM here.

It wound up being a marvelous day. The cattle cooperated, moving up the canyon and climbing the steep hillside easily.  The weather was warm, with a cooling breeze arriving at just the right time.  Throughout the day God’s words came to me, their truth ringing through my mind.

Today if you feel weary, take the words of the Lord with you.  For He is above and around and in you.  He is with you.  He is here.

Questions to Ponder:

Are you weary?

Sometimes life can seem overwhelming.  When this is the case, don’t forget to remember God.  Stop, take a moment, and tell the Lord how you feel.
Memorize the  scriptures below.  Ask the Lord to bring them to your memory when they are needed.  Write your thoughts and feelings in your journal.  Ask the Lord to give you strength.

God’s Word:

Psalm 139:7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? 8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. 9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

Isaiah 40:29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. (NIV)

Don’t Look

Comparison is an ugly thing. It can keep us from being content and thankful for what we have and for who we were created to be. Yet in a society that places great importance on youth, beauty, weight, wealth, health, success, and material goods, it can be easy to fall into its snare.

While walking down the street one morning, I was unconsciously comparing myself to others. Quite frankly, I wasn’t measuring up very well. The more I walked and compared, the more discouraged I became.
The Lord:
“Don’t look”.
“Don’t look? LORD, what do you mean?”
The Lord:
“Daughter, if your eyes are causing you to lose your peace, you must not look.  You are beautiful in my sight, created for my purposes. If your eyes and mind are clouded with concern about how you measure against others, those around you will not be able to see the light of the beauty I have placed within you. It will be darkened by the cares of comparison.”

“I see LORD.
Please help me not to compare.
Help me to give thanks for who you created me to be.
Thank you LORD for the good plans you have for my life.”
Questions to ponder:
Are there areas of your life where you compare yourself to others?
You physical appearance?
Your possessions?
Your spouse?
Your job?
Your abilities?
Even your level of faith in God?
Remember, you are God’s beautiful creation.  He knew what He was doing when He made you.  He has placed you where you are for a reason.  He has good plans for Your life.  Let us not allow the cloud of comparison to dim the light of God’s presence within us.
 God’s Word:
Proverbs 4:25 Let your eyes look straight ahead, And your eyelids look right before you. 26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. 27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.
Psalm 139:14,15,16
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, 16 your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. (NIV)

Proverbs 31:30
Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.
Isaiah 29:16
Surely you have things turned around! Shall the potter be esteemed as the clay; For shall the thing made say of him who made it, “He did not make me”? Or shall the thing formed say of him who formed it, “He has no understanding”? (NKJV)

 Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

Secrets is an example of how God “speaks” to us about His love and acceptance.

My husband called and said that he, his boss, and several co-workers had decided on a last minute dinner after work. My husband has always been VERY good about inviting me to join him whenever he can, and I appreciate it greatly.  I have met many interesting and nice people by accompanying him on business dinners.  Tonight, however, I wasn’t looking forward to going.  I didn’t have much time to get ready, and I didn’t know all of the people who were attending.  Still, I had made it a habit to accept an invitation when it was extended.

I am what I would describe as a “boring” dresser.  A kinder way to put it would be “conservative”.  I put on my black pants, black shoes, and black shirt with a little white trim.  I even had a black shawl that I had gotten for Christmas to throw over the top to complete the outfit.
It was time to go. I walked over to the drawer to get my keys, my glasses, my wallet and my purse. As I placed my wallet in my purse, I smiled. It was bright shiney green!
Over the holiday season, I had run into a great sale on wallets.  Being in need, I took advantage of the sale.  As I looked through the choices, there were many in my traditionally favorite color.  Black.  But the green wallet called to me.  Feeling frivolous and carefree, I picked it from the bin and took it to the register.
That evening as I walked to meet my husband, I knew no one would know that I had that wallet in my purse. No one but God.   On the outside nothing was outstanding.  But on the inside, where no one else could see, was hidden a piece of the real me.
I went to dinner with additional confidence that night. In the midst of people I did not really know, I felt loved. One who knows me was there with me. Sharing the secret of the knowledge of who I really am.  And loving me for who I was created to be.
Questions to Ponder:
Do you have secrets? God knows your secrets too.
Do you have happy secrets? Share them with Him.
Do you have sad secrets? Talk to Him about them.
It is safe to share your secrets with God.
For its no secret.  He cares deeply about you!
 Isaiah 45:3
And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the LORD, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel.
Psalm 62:8
Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us.
  Isaiah 55:12
For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

He Sees You

God has known us since before we were born!

During our stay in Washington D.C. we had the privilege of touring many of the sites in the nation’s capital. One of those sites was Mount Vernon, George Washington’s home.

“Wow Lord. Here I stand, looking into the very window of George Washington’s storehouse. Walking on the grounds where he used to live. Catching a glimpse of life at such an important place in American history. I would have never guessed I would be here. How amazing! Thank you.”

The Lord:
“Daughter, it is true that this is an important place. Many important things have happened here. But I want you to know, that even as the people who lived here hustled and bustled about, I could see you standing at this very window, giving thanks to me. And I loved you then.”
How astonishing it is to know that God sees our lives, from beginning to end. That He knew us before we were born. That He has recorded our days in a book. He sees us in good times. He sees us in hard times. He sees us when we are following His ways. He sees us when we are not. And He loves us.

Know that no matter what state your life is in right this moment, or what it has been in the past;  He sees you. He knew since before you were born that you would be here, at this place, at this time, reading these words.

He is pleased with you. He knows you. He loves you. He sees you.

God’s Word
Psalm 139:16
all the days ordained for me were written in your book

Isaiah 49:1
Listen to me, you islands; hear this, you distant nations: Before I was born the Lord called me; from my birth he has made mention of my name.

Jeremiah 1:5
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; . . . . .

Questions to ponder.

Are there times in your life when you felt God’s presence?  What are some of the ways He has shown His love for you?

Find scripture verses that confirm God’s love for you and His presence in your life. Write them on a notecard and carry them with you this week.

Are there times in your life when you wondered where God was?  Did He not see?
Do you need to forgive God for not being there when you needed Him?

God is with us always. But even Jesus, as He was hanging on the cross, wondered where His Father was (Mathew 27:46, Mark 15:34).  I believe God was there, weeping.

We too can wonder where God was during our difficult times.  But, as God wept for Jesus, so has He wept for us.  And, as He raised Jesus from the dead, so will He take the times of our own cross, and use them to bring forth life.If need be, find a trusted friend, counselor or pastor and talk to them about your questions…

The Lord knows your questions.  Tell Him about them.  Ask Him to help you understand.

When we see God in ways other than the way He really is, it can cause us to be afraid to come to Him. He is not a stern Father who sits up in heaven just waiting for us to do something wrong so He can punish us. That is a lie and it can keep us in fear. He is the loving God who sent His Son Jesus to save us.  We need not live in torment.  It is God’s desire that we live in the freedom and knowledge that He loves us perfectly with an everlasting love.

The Lord:
“Beloved, you must quiet yourself and listen for my voice.”

“I have heard you calling me Lord, but I am afraid.”
The Lord:
“Of what are you afraid?”
“I am afraid that I am not doing things right.
I am afraid that I won’t hear You.
I am afraid you will ask me to do something I don’t want to do.”
The Lord:
“Daughter, when you close the door to the Truth of My Voice because of fear, you open the door to the lies of the enemy. You have nothing to fear from Me.   I do not demand perfection. I will not abandon you and leave you to struggle alone.  I love you.   I long to spend time with you. You do not need to be afraid.”

Questions to ponder:
Is there something that is keeping you from listening to God’s voice?  Busyness?  Guilt ?  Fear?  Read the scripture verses that follow, then throughout the week determine that you will quiet yourself and listen for His voice.  As you are walking, driving to work, or in the quiet of the morning.  You need not be afraid.
He is waiting to hear from you!

God’s Word

Ps 46:10
Be still and know that I am God. . . .

1 John4:18
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment
John 8:44
…..the Devil. . . . . is a liar and the father of lies.(NLT)

Romans 8:1
There is therefore now  no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
John 10:27
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

 Jeremiah 31:3
The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee
