James 1:17 (KJV)
17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights….
Last fall I attended a ladies retreat. During the afternoon meeting the speaker invited us to ask God what tool He was going to give us for the upcoming year. We all took a moment to be quiet and see what our tool would be. One lady felt like she got a flashlight. How fun! She can see in the dark and lead others by her light. Another got a paintbrush. Another a sword (which is The Word of God). One received a toolbox to help her organize the tools she already had. Each person received a different tool to be used in 2018. As for myself? I had the impression that The LORD was giving me a chisel. While we use them on the ranch for a variety of things, I still had to look that one up!
Wikipedia says the following about chisels:
A chisel is a tool with a characteristically shaped cutting edge (such that wood chisels have lent part of their name to a particular grind) of blade on its end, for carving or cutting a hard material such as wood, stone, or metal by hand, struck with a mallet, or mechanical power….
Chiselling use involves forcing the blade into some material to cut it. The driving force may be applied by pushing by hand, or by using a mallet or hammer. In industrial use, a hydraulic ram or falling weight (‘trip hammer’) drives a chisel into the material.
Wow! May my spiritual chisel be used to refine the hard edges in me that need to be softened. May it chip away at the things that prevent my relationships with others from being what they are meant to be. May it be used to remove those areas where I have unbelief, so that my faith may become stronger!
If you are a regular reader of ALME, you will not be surprised when I invite you to join me and ask God what tool(s) He has for you this year. There are a number of ways to do so. Here are some examples:
*Sit quietly and see what impression you have in your spirit.
*Ask Him for a tool you would like. The lady who received a paintbrush is a painter!
*One woman I know asked a loved one what tool they would be if they could be any tool. Ask yourself that, then ask The Lord to give you that tool to use in His Kingdom.
*Keep your eyes peeled! If you keep hearing a particular tool name, or seeing the same one over and over, that may be the way He is showing you what tool He has for you.
However you decide to ask, don’t be afraid to ask. We know your gift will be good and given out of Love, to be used in a spirit of Love. You probably won’t receive a steamroller to put others in their place, but you might use it to flatten out those mountains you cannot climb. God knows what you need, both for yourself and for others, and He wants to give it to you.
Finally, have fun with God in the asking, knowing that He loves you. He looks forward to laughing with you. He is there to cry with you as well. (A scalpel to mend a wounded heart just came to mind). He is the supplier of all your needs, according to His riches in glory by Jesus (Philippians 4:19). He knows what we need before we even ask (Mathew 6:8), and He desires to give us good and perfect gifts from above.
If you are so inclined, feel free to leave a note on the site telling us what tool you received!
***Side note-I will wield my chisel when hand pressure is required. When it comes to the mallet, hammer or hydraulic ram, I think I will hand it over to God!
